The Grande Traversata Elbana is a route with a deeply Mediterranean character, capable of surprising with the variety of its landscapes and the satisfaction it offers day after day. The itinerary crosses the island along a dynamic route, made up of ascents and descents that are never monotonous, with views ranging from the sea to the mountains, from small towns to the wildest areas of the interior.

This trip is designed for those who love walking and want to discover Elba from a different, slower and more authentic perspective. The trekking days allow you to cross the entire island, touching evocative locations such as Porto Azzurro, Portoferraio, Procchio and Pomonte.

The sea accompanies much of the experience, often visible along the route and close to the structures selected for overnight stays. Good food, coastal villages and the island’s light complete an intense but accessible hiking trip, ideal for those seeking nature, movement and Mediterranean atmosphere.

The strength of the itinerary lies in its variety: each stage has a different character. You pass from the most challenging and panoramic trails of the first day, to dirt roads and cork oak forests, to the more relaxing sections near the beaches and the spectacular ridge descent from Monte Capanne towards Pomonte.

It is a trip suitable for those who want to cross the island on foot, discovering not only its most beautiful landscapes, but also its geological and mining history, which will be explored in depth with a dedicated visit on the final day.

Trip program

Day 1: Arrival in Porto Azzurro
The trip begins with arrival on Elba Island and the group meeting in Porto Azzurro.

The first day is dedicated to settling in, the introductory briefing and the presentation of the Grande Traversata Elbana. There will be free time in the afternoon to start discovering Porto Azzurro, stroll through the center and breathe in the island’s atmosphere before the trek begins.

Dinner will be on your own.

Day 2: From Cavo to Porto Azzurro
The Grande Traversata Elbana begins from Cavo, which will be reached with a short transfer by van.

This first stage is one of the most challenging but also one of the most exciting of the entire itinerary. The route immediately offers a taste of the GTE’s character, with panoramic trails, ascents and descents and surprising views of the island and the sea.

The return to Porto Azzurro allows you to leave part of the backpack contents at the accommodation and tackle the day with greater ease.

Indicative stage details: approximately 20 km, 900 m of elevation gain.

Day 3: From Porto Azzurro to Portoferraio
The second day of walking leads from Porto Azzurro to Portoferraio.

The first part of the route takes place on a pleasant dirt road, without particular difficulties. Subsequently the trail enters an evocative cork oak forest and continues on red earth, with a more sustained ascent that makes the stage varied and interesting.

Arrival in Portoferraio offers the opportunity to visit the town, stroll through its streets and enjoy the sea at the end of the day.

Indicative stage details: approximately 15 km, 500 m of elevation gain.

Day 4: From Portoferraio to Procchio
This stage is one of the most pleasant and relaxing of the traverse.

The route connects Portoferraio to Procchio crossing coastal environments and panoramic sections, with the possibility of stopping for a swim during the day. The walk alternates trails and passages near the sea, making the stage less demanding but very rewarding from a scenic point of view.

Arrival in Procchio is particularly evocative, with the passage from one beach to another and the relaxed atmosphere typical of seaside towns.

Indicative stage details: approximately 10 km, 500 m of elevation gain.

Day 5: From Procchio to Pomonte
This is probably one of the most spectacular stages of the entire Grande Traversata Elbana.

From the Procchio area you reach the base of Monte Capanne, the key point of the day. From here begins a long ridge descent towards Pomonte, in an environment of great charm, among rock, Mediterranean vegetation and open views over the sea.

The trail is varied, articulated and very panoramic. It is an intense stage, but also among the most rewarding of the trip, capable of leaving a strong memory of the experience on the island.

Indicative stage details: approximately 16 km, 950 m of elevation gain.

Day 6: Rio Marina Mining Park and end of trip
The last morning is dedicated to visiting the Rio Marina Mining Park.

Elba Island has a very rich geological and mining history, which represents a fundamental part of its identity. The visit allows you to explore this aspect of the territory and complete the trip with a different view of the island, beyond walking and the sea.

At the end of the activity there is the possibility of being accompanied to Portoferraio.

The Grande Traversata Elbana does not present particular technical difficulties, but it is a long and dynamic route, with stages that require good hiking preparation. The ascents and descents make the route varied and sometimes tiring, especially on days with greater elevation gain.

During the trip the trekking is itinerant, so it will be necessary to carry only the backpack with the bare essentials for the day and for the planned movements.

Recommended equipment: trekking clothing, shoes suitable for natural and rocky trails, light backpack, water bottle, sun protection, swimsuit and essential personal items. Before departure a detailed list of recommended equipment will be provided.
