Capanna Margherita: Europe’s highest mountain hut
Capanna Margherita, located on Punta Gnifetti in the Monte Rosa massif, is the highest mountain hut in Europe at an altitude of 4,554 meters.
Reaching it means living a true high-mountain experience, crossing the great glaciers of the Rosa in a spectacular setting. The climb, while not presenting particular technical difficulties, requires good physical fitness and the use of crampons and an ice axe.
From the summit, the panorama is extraordinary, with a view that spans many of the highest peaks in the Alps.
How the experience works
The climb takes place over two days. On the first day, you start from Gressoney-Staffal and, using the ski lifts, reach Punta Indren.
From here, a scenic walk on the glacier of about an hour leads to the hut where you will spend the night (Rifugio Mantova or Rifugio Gnifetti).
On the second day, you set off at dawn to tackle the climb towards Capanna Margherita, crossing the wide Monte Rosa glacier until you reach the 4,554 meters of Punta Gnifetti.
