Cinque Terre Crossing
A multi-day trek overlooking the Ligurian Sea, through villages suspended between land and sea, panoramic paths, terraced vineyards, the scent of Mediterranean scrub, and some of Liguria’s most iconic views.
The Cinque Terre are a unique territory, fragile and powerful at the same time. Five colorful villages, built in balance between the verticality of the coast and the immensity of the sea, which have always fascinated travelers, hikers, artists, and writers.
This trip allows you to cross them on foot, experiencing the area at the slow pace of walking. It’s not just about admiring spectacular landscapes, but about getting in touch with a history made of hard work, adaptation, and a deep relationship with the environment. The paths tell the story of those who inhabited these places, shaping steep slopes, building dry stone walls, cultivating the land, and living alongside the power of the sea.
The crossing alternates intense and panoramic days, small logistical transfers, and returns to the base, allowing you to walk every day with a light backpack. The route crosses some of the most suggestive stretches of the Ligurian coast, from Portovenere to Riomaggiore, then along the Cinque Terre to Monterosso and finally towards Levanto.
Why choose this trek
This itinerary is ideal for those who want to discover the Cinque Terre in an active way, away from a quick and superficial visit. Walking allows you to observe the landscape more closely, crossing paths, stairways, cultivated terraces, woods, and coastal stretches that reveal the authentic character of this territory.
The trip requires a good habit of walking, especially for the daily elevation gain, but it does not present particular technical difficulties. The formula with a return to the base every evening makes the experience more comfortable, as it allows you to leave your luggage at the accommodation and tackle the daily excursions with only what you need for the day.
The presence of the guide allows you to experience the route with greater peace of mind, also considering that the paths of the Cinque Terre can undergo variations or closures for maintenance due to the fragile and dynamic nature of the territory.
Trek program and details
Trip program
Day 1: Arrival and initial briefing
The trip begins with the group meeting in the evening.
The first day is dedicated to settling into the apartment, getting to know the participants, and an introductory briefing with the guide. It will be an opportunity to present the program, organize the final details, and prepare for the departure the following day.
Day 2: From Portovenere to Riomaggiore
The first day of walking leads from Portovenere to Riomaggiore, along a spectacular and very panoramic stretch.
After a short bus transfer to reach Portovenere, the excursion begins. The route allows you to immediately enter the vertical atmosphere of the Cinque Terre, among climbs, ridges, open views of the Ligurian Sea, and continuous glimpses of the coast.
It is an intense stage, perfect for understanding the character of this territory from the very first day: beautiful, steep, bright, and deeply Mediterranean.
Indicative stage details: about 15 km, 1,000 m of positive elevation gain.
Day 3: From Riomaggiore to Monterosso
The second day of trekking crosses the Cinque Terre from east to west, connecting Riomaggiore to Monterosso.
It is one of the most representative stages of the trip, as it allows you to experience the heart of the territory and cross the villages that have made this stretch of coast famous. The walk alternates panoramic stretches, climbs, descents, passages between terraces, and views of the sea.
The route may undergo variations based on the condition of the paths and any closures for maintenance. The Cinque Terre are a wonderful but fragile environment, and the management of the paths can change over time. The guide will evaluate the best route based on the current situation.
Indicative stage details: about 12 km, 1,000 m of positive elevation gain.
Day 4: From Monterosso to Levanto
The last day of walking connects Monterosso and Levanto, with a shorter stage that is still full of views and satisfaction.
The route allows you to conclude the crossing with one last stretch overlooking the sea, among coastal paths, Mediterranean vegetation, and views of the Ligurian coast. Based on the group’s fatigue and the day’s conditions, the direction of the route can be evaluated together with the guide, walking from Monterosso to Levanto or vice versa.
