Matterhorn: the most iconic mountain
The Matterhorn needs no introduction. Its silhouette is unmistakable, as elegant as it is simple, just as a child would draw it.
The ascent to the summit is demanding and combines environmental severity, the fatigue of high altitude, and the technical difficulties of a rocky ridge, where there are vertical and exposed sections requiring climbing.
Excellent fitness, acclimatization, and solid mountaineering experience on all types of terrain are therefore required. Such effort is rewarded, however, by reaching one of the most aesthetic and panoramic peaks in the entire Alpine range.
The route we offer is the Italian normal route along the Lion Ridge.
For those who do not yet have consolidated mountaineering experience, it is advisable to do preparatory climbs with our guides or participate in the Matterhorn course, which will allow you to arrive as prepared as possible for your objective.
How the experience unfolds
The ascent takes place over two days. On the first day, you depart from Cervinia and, using the ski lifts, reach Pian Maison (2,550m). From here, a walk of about an hour and a half leads to Rifugio Oriondè (2,800m). In another 4-5 hours over moraines and technical terrain, partially equipped, you reach Capanna Carrel (3,850m) perched on the Lion Ridge, where you spend the night.
On the second day, you depart before dawn to tackle the Corda della Sveglia. The ascent alternates vertical sections equipped with fixed ropes with easier unequipped sections that require sure footing. From Pic Tyndall, the environment becomes even more exposed until the final rock pitch, which is tackled following a steep series of fixed ropes. The descent still requires a good dose of concentration and energy and normally involves returning to Cervinia the same day.
